A funny thing happened to Iselle on the way to Oahu - Mauna Loa. This aint Florida, Iselle! Mauna Loa, one of the volcanic mountains on the Big Island, stands at nearly 14,000 feet elevation, was Iselles first landfall, and which held Iselle at bay for over five hours, significantly weakening the storm in the process. As you can see in the pics, below, Iselle was tracking from the southeast, heading directly for the Big Island and Mauna Loa (the lower mountain in the second pic). Expending a great deal of energy trying to get past Mauna Loa, Iselle dumped choke rain on the southeast side of the BI. While Iselle was wreaking havoc on the southeast BI, and unable to move past Mauna Loa, Kona, on the opposite side of the island was experiencing calm trade winds, 10mph, and fairly clear skies. Wow! So far all we have in our neighborhood on Oahu are light winds, occasional light drizzle, and rainbows. Patty just took pic #3, from our lanai, looking across Ala Wai Yacht Harbor and Ala Moana beach. Thanks, Mauna Loa!
