A garlic mustard leaf and stem weigh perhaps some fraction of an ounce. Imagine how many garlic mustard leaves and stems are in a pound, or a hundred pounds. But how about 5,280 pounds! That’s how much the winning team pulled this year to capture the Southeastern Wisconsin Invasive Species Consortium Garlic Mustard Pull-A-Thon Trophy. The team that worked at the Mequon Nature Preserve won the prize by pulling more than half of all of the garlic mustard and dame’s rocket bagged by all 18 teams that competed this year. The total for all teams was 10,060 pounds pulled by 332 teams in the eight-county area represented by SEWISC. Not only did these teams collect more than five tons of garlic mustard and dame’s rocket, but they raised valuable funds to their groups and for SEWISC. The tax-deductible pledged contributions were shared between SEWISC and event partners and the funds will be used for invasive species education, prevention and control in southeastern Wisconsin. Got garlic mustard? Pull a team together for next year’s pull-a-thon. It’s never too early to think about 2015.
