A good man lies wounded, life bleeding away This hasn’t turned out to be a good day He was doing his job, working hard as he should Upholding the right and protecting the good He looked oh so fine in his careful pressed suit From the crown of his hat to the shine of his boot But he lies on the ground now, rumpled and shot Struck down in a moment, how sad is his lot. But much sadder still is the fact that those left Are struggling with loss, alone and bereft Because someone thought they could shoot and then run With no thought what would happen when it had been done They thought of themselves and to save their own skin They shot down and killed the pride of his kin They fled and they left him by the side of his car But his brothers in arms caught up before far Now many will ask how this could come to be And debate and rally, and cry, but you see The Trooper was doing his job as you know And the killer was acting in manner quite low Now our children will watch how we all react And pick up the lessons of how they should act Around men and women in uniformed authority So take your child aside, and say “Now listen to me- You will hear stories and yes, it was bad The news will distract you with fun to be had They’ll show you new movies, and hot new toys But what you must know child, is it is all noise The important news to be had at this time Is that Trooper who put his life on the line Protected and loved us, through thick and thin And I would be proud if you grew up like him.”
