A great introduction to natural swimming pools. Now, as a SUSTAINABLE landscape course, we must ask, is this sustainable? Aside from the apparent ecological benefits, its important to note the materials used (embedded energy, transportation costs associated with non-local materials, etc.), as well as the climates this type of pool are appropriate in. Western Oregon, with its abundant winter/spring rainfall, would certainly be more appropriate than drought-stricken Southern California, especially if the pool could be fed by a natural water source in the summer/fall, or was designed to function well in the rainless summer months. It is important for us to be critical of landscape choices, and to not get caught up in the beauty of it all. That being said, did you SEE the amount of pondlife in that established natural swimming pool?!
