A great true story from a Steely Dan fan... In 1988, while living in Haiku on the Island of Maui, my wife and I were looking for a car to purchase. I copied the phone number on a for sale sign on a well-used Subaru station wagon with many visible rusted areas and when the woman answered I was given directions to the home where the car was. I knew the area quite well but was taken aback by her directions because I had driven by that address many time. The home was between the main highway and the ocean and when I pulled in I went to the house at the ocean end of the land. She invited me in and, while I waited in the kitchen for her to get the upkeep receipts, I glanced down at a Guitar Player magazine on the counter. I noticed the addressee just as she was returning to the kitchen and I asked her Is this who I think it is? and she nodded yes. It was addressed to Walter Becker. I told her that both I and my brother were great fans and she asked if I had time to have tea with them because he would be back from an acupuncture treatment in one of the other buildings on the property shortly. I responded with some form of assent and over the next two hours we had tea on the porch facing the ocean. Memorable to say the least and the story has many other aspects from that day and afterward which Ill keep to myself since some of them might make it clear where he lived at the time (and may still) and what happened at the bar across the street on Tuesdays in the back room. Suffice to say that Walter and his girl friend were wonderful and gracious hosts and I was made to feel at ease effortlessly by them both. If Walter sees this then I thank you again for a magical day (to me) while out looking for a car to purchase.
