A gruesome sight lies below the beautiful ocean waters off California: mile-long walls of death that capture and kill dolphins, whales, sharks and anything else that can get tangled up within them. These are drift gillnets, a deadly fishing method for swordfish where over half the animals caught are simply thrown back overboard, dead or dying. Oceana submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for photos of what these nets are pulling up off California. In response, the government sent over 400 photos of dead and mutilated dolphins, sea lions, and other creatures, including the rare megamouth shark shown here. Now we know exactly what the wrath of drift gillnetting looks like—and it’s devastating. California’s lawmakers are taking action. A new bill, AB 2019, introduced by California Assemblymember Paul Fong will ban these deadly nets, leaving room for a safer, sustainable swordfish fishery. We need you to act. Tell California legislators and Governor Brown to support AB 2019 to end drift gillnetting off California and stop these pointless deaths. »
