A happy group of Sanger High football players are headed back to the Central Section Division II semifinal round. The Apaches defense made the big plays early, and used explosive offensive plays to bust out to a 35-7 halftime lead and cruise past San Joaquin Memorial by a 49-26 final score Friday night at Tom Flores Stadium. The defense made an early stop on downs deep in SHS territory against the Panthers, and then Sawyer Pittman busted free on an 86 yard scoring run. It was one of three first-half touchdowns for the senior, and quarterback Travis Turner and running back Brandon Gonzalez added TD runs in the first half. Sanger tacked on two more TDs in the second half on a run by Andrew Azua and interception return by Jaime Ayala. Sangers defense limited the Memorial (8-4) to just 23 net yards rushing. The No. 4 seed Apaches (8-3) now head to Bakersfield to take on top seed Ridgeview, who cruised past Tulare Union, 55-27.
