A huge welcome to Bethany Bell to the College of Social Work family! Bethany A. Bell, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor in the College of Social Work at the University of South Carolina, joined the faculty in January 2015. She earned her PhD in community and family health and educational research and measurement from the University of South Florida, her MPH in Health Promotion Sciences from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and her BA in Sociology from Mary Washington College. After receiving her BA and before entering graduate school, she served in AmeriCorps for two years with the National AIDS Fund and the American Red Cross and started a mobile immunization van program in Tulsa, OK. Her public health training focused on theory and methods for developing and evaluating community-level interventions whereas her methodological training focused on traditional and modern research methods through a series of measurement, statistics, evaluation, and research design courses, practicum, and directed research projects. Her research is both methodological and applied; the overall goals of her research are (1) to expand the methodological knowledge base of complex statistical procedures to advance health disparities research and (2) to reduce health-related disparities, with a primary focus on nutrition-related outcomes, among disenfranchised populations living in the Southeast and beyond.
