The earth could get along perfectly well without people, but if anything happened to our mitochondria, we’d die.” —A Wind in the Door by Madeleine L’Engle (1973) While Ms. LEngles concept of mitochondria was more science fiction than actual science, her words captivated me as a child and prompted me to learn more about the body.
