A job vacancy for wildlife management: Management Plan for the Saltwater Crocodile in Timor-Leste. Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Environment, Secretariat of State for Environment (MCIE-SEMA) / National Directorate for Biodiversity Protection and Restoration (DNPRB) in Timor-Leste is seeking a qualified expert for a short-term consultancy in the field of wildlife management to develop Management Plan for the Saltwater Crocodile in Timor-Leste Duration Up to 60 working days Responsible Mr Cristovão Pereira da C. Martins, Lic. Eco., Director - DNPRB Background Timor-Leste provides a premium habitat for the Saltwater Crocodile across large parts of its territory. Suitable habitat is frequently located in areas populated by humans, and hence interactions are inevitable. Serious injuries and fatalities as well as losses on domestic animals are being reported in recent years. On the other hand, crocodiles are considered mythic animals, and thus enjoy favourable status among Timorese people. The government of Timor-Leste is aware of the situation, and intends to enhance the co-existence of people and crocodiles through implementation of a management program. Objective Developing Management Plan for the Saltwater Crocodile in Timor-Leste Tasks Compiling basic information Crocodile biology/ecology Assessment of situation Crocodile population and conservation status Distribution of crocodile habitats Geo-referencing of habitats and distribution areas (providing GIS maps) Crocodile-human conflict potential (fishing, farming, recreation, habituation) Classifying crocodile distribution areas with respect to the conflict potential Proposing measures to minimize the conflict Preventive measures Raising public awareness Exclusion enclosures Warning system/mechanisms for action Mitigating measures/‘Problem crocodiles’ Trapping/Translocation Culling Damage compensation Accompanying measures Survey and monitoring program Commercial use of crocodiles Capacity development for relevant authorities, counselling and advisory services (Crocodile Management Center) Public education Deliverables Maps of of habitats and distribution areas Geo-referenced classification of areas with conflict potential Presentation of the measures to minimize the conflict Draft of the Management Plan Public consultations Submission of the final Management Plan Qualifications and Skills: University degree in biology, wildlife management, conservation or related field At least ten years of professional experience Proven expertise in designing wildlife management plans Significant experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative assessments of wildlife populations, and population surveys Demonstrated working skills in using GIS Experience with processes on implementation of interests of stakeholders at various levels of conservation planning Experience in implementing conservation actions Experience in cooperating with partners of different level of seniority and technical knowledge Inter-personal skills for operating in a multicultural environment Flexibility to work both in a team and independently Ability to travel nationally as required Good communication skills Excellent verbal and written English, working knowledge of Tetum and/or Bahasa Indonesia would be an asset Expertise in crocodile management is an asset Previous working experience in Timor-Leste is an asset Applications Qualified and interested international experts are requested to submit their application letter and CV with references to Dr Peter Pechacek, [email protected] Deadline 10 April 2014.
