A key feature of Filipino culture is respect for elders/seniors. So marked is this that if someone older than you by a day insists that white is black, you have to say that white is black. And yet at the same time, Filipinos have almost no idea what self-respect is. This is because Filipino culture is a hierarchical culture that values social harmony and conformity, and all of this is perfectly suited for an agrarian people planting rice, kamote, corn; and fishing in rivers and seas in the 16th century. Quite naturally, Filipino culture would be hostile to any member of it who would dare to be an individual, rather than a bland copy of everybody else.
