A key part of our long term economic plan is ensuring that every child growing up in Northfield receives and excellent education and the best opportunities for them to make the most of their unique talents and potential. Thats why Im pleased that under this government, the children that need extra help are getting it through the funding of the Pupil Premium. Between 2011 and 2014, schools in Birmingham Northfield will receive £17.9 million through the Pupil Premium, ensuring that disadvantaged children are given the support they need to fulfil their potential. This money is ring fenced and is used by the school to provide help where it is needed to ensure young people can participate fully in the opportunities on offer by their education. Another key plank of our education reforms has been to ensure that young people in our schools are studying the right subjects - those that they will need to progress to further opportunities whether thats into the workplace, a traineeship, apprenticeship or further education. The core subjects - English, maths and science, are needed and valued by employers and give young people a better start in life. Im very pleased that since 2010 there has been an increase of 144.4% in the number of pupils in Northfield taking the key subjects that they need to get a good job. We have incentivised schools to encourage more pupils to take core subjects at GCSE. I invest time visiting our local schools to understand the challenges and issues they face as well as to talk to the young people about our democratic system. I believe that educating our young people is incredibly important. If you would like me to visit your school please dont hesitate to get in touch on [email protected].
