A little food for thought (this is probably gonna seriously piss some folks off so be ready, Im not sorry for writing it). There has been some debate about adding additional faces to Mount Rushmore, namely Presidents Reagan and Obama to start with. When I first heard of this I of course thought that Reagan was a no-brainer but admittedly Obama (at first) was not a top pick of mine. Since having had the last 5 1/2 years to think about this, overcome how some in the national media & what others have said and most importantly, grown up a bit (and hopefully gained some wisdom along the way), I have come to believe that not only should President Reagan be on Rushmore BUT....so should President Obama. There are those that would argue saying hes a communist, socialist, what have you (I used to think that way too) but in reality he sees things and manages from a different point of view, like Reagan did if you remember (yes, I will freely admit that times have changed quite a bit since then). The main reason I believe President Obama belongs on Rushmore is because the people of this great nation final overcame their fear (yes, FEAR) and elected a black man to its highest office. This country, in electing Obama, finally made a HUGE step to overcome the crippling legacy of racism and bigotry that Johnson spoke of in passing the Civil Rights bill. That alone is more than worth recognition! Hes the first black president, I think the significance of that escapes those that trash him every day. Now, there are two others that need to be on the Mount as well and they have yet to be elected to Americas highest post, the first woman and first Hispanic or multi-racial/multi-cultural President. Put those faces next to the other greats already there and you have the picture of a country that is true to itself and FREE in the eyes of the rest of the world. Also, you (and the world) recognize that this country is ready to move forward! We need to move on from the past and the things that hold people back. Some of my old friends may be scratching their heads as they read this saying Smitty, really?. Yes folks, really! Just because someone has a different opinion or sees things differently than you it doesnt make them wrong or not worthy. Obama is not a bad man, he doesnt love his children, family or friends any less than you do. He just sees things a bit differently and thats OK. He holds his office because he was elected to it and Im not ashamed to say Im OK with it, even if I dont agree with some of the calls he makes or the way in which he advises us as citizens. The man is not perfect, none of us are.
