A little help please. I basically know how to do this as I have done it on plenty of engines. We are trying to get our new to us XR4Ti running. The last owner lost interest in his project and sold it to us. He told us he had redone the cylinder head, however he did not elaborate. I have the Factory Merkur maintenance manual and I do not seem to be able to find the information I need. So........ How do I check and set if necessary set the static base timing for the Cam and ignition. The book shows the relative position of the rotor to the two cap screws. OK, but, The Distributor cap has a #1 printed near a different location from where the manual shows it should be. I presume the cam should be times at TDC # 1 and there are three different timing marks below the cam gear on the head. We just tried to start and all it did was burp and fart and not speed up the engine on the intermittent firing. Once I am satisfied It was timed correctly I will know how to proceed. At this point all I want is stock timing for both.
