A little history behind this song. I originally penned and recorded the lyrics in 2008 over Erykah Badus Soldier instrumental from her Amerykah Part I album, which song and album inspired the song. If memory serves me correct I want to say that the Jena 6 case was also a factor in my mindset when penning this piece. It appears on my first and only mixtape to date, God Iz Music Mixtape. Fun facts are: Ive performed this song as a spoken word piece for the last four years, Ive performed the mixtape version with Mr. Al Pete, & I rocked a live version with ill Clintons former band Free Quincy where we infused the Soldier hook as a bridge (that version was truly fly). In 2010, during the bulk of the sessions which will finally be RAPDNA part I (formerly titled Dreams & Aspirations) ill Clinton reviewed songs from my first mixtape for opportunities to create original music too. He reached out to me one day with this upbeat, go-go reminiscent instrumental (as pointed out by Dove Hagan, as I had never heard of go-go music prior to). The drums and percussion instruments really drive the song and I was hooked after that funky bass guitar intro and that piano heightening chorus section. Waiting for the right time, we are finally (re)introducing Get Up (All My People) as intended. The subtitle All My People was added after recording in 2010 or 2011, a guest verse record with supergroup AAA (Al Pete, Alias aka Milton Branson, & Rodney P the Average Jo) that was also called Get Up and promoted as single off the groups self-titled album. I penned the hook to that song around the main sample which states Get on up! All My People distinguishes my Get Up from the Get Up I recorded with AAA. The two songs are similarly themed around conscious community awareness with AAAs emphasizing more one personally driven achievement and mine on the ghetto urban peoples social and economic condition.
