It isn’t leprosy We just have kin, keen on jealousy Minor hatreds without truce Then started growing big roots Ostracized by the self So billions of cakes lay stuck to the shelf So permit a sneeze or two If for simple rational thoughts, you wonder if they have the tools Those who have been to school Got schooled about a mess in a pot of soup They learned to hate To choose only similar tongues, they got trained It isn’t epilepsy Epilepsy isn’t an epidemic But this epidemic Defies thoughts and studies of all academies Greece is a country To grease is our hobby Forbes might list those who only earn billions We might take the first rows, of a roll call of those stealing billions What about minions Empty brains which we breed in millions If he falls in a puddle, they are standing by applauding a wise decision If he says corruption is just stealing, they are standing by, proud to be morons Yet they speak English, a sweet alien language still bequeathing status If four got reduced to two, they will ask you to check the size of each titus If the egg is small, they will say it’s wicked to not praise the fowl If criminals and drug lords dine with the king, they are busy saying there’s no sacred cow It isn’t an aversion to smiles Just leave me out of the joys of your crimes If baskets remain empty, why stage a new yam festival Why head into dinner with a cannibal what independence when we have hundreds of shackled girls what independence the kings guards are offering bullets if you dare take the bridge while his highness is passing unless it has changed meaning, It isn’t independence When to love, you are still on hateful choices of failed bigotry dependent It isn’t liberation, when the best of us are only determined by silver and coin Don’t pour any libation, not when blood soaks your earth and your land boils Don’t offer bile, our gods are not paupers Even if our priests are not proper… Akeem Adetayo Oyalowo October 1, 2014
