A little over a year ago, we spent several nights in the hospital, - TopicsExpress

A little over a year ago, we spent several nights in the hospital, one in the PICU, after Archer had a very non-textbook reaction to a simple surgery. That was scary. A year before that, we spent multiple days in the hospital when he had the stomach flu and didnt respond to re-hydration. He had multiple tests, some invasive, and so much IV fluid that his limbs were hard and his eyes swollen shut. And the doctors told us they just didnt have an answer. There was a clear moment then, where I thought if I just walked out of the hospital, if I just left, then they could not find me to tell me something horrible. If they could not find me, it could not happen. That was scary too. But this woman, this woman is watching her son die. She is our nightmares come to life. This is what you risk when you dont vaccinate. Every person who chooses to walk this earth un-vaccinated, or whose parents make that choice for them, puts babies just like this one at risk. Children who havent had their second vaccine. Pregnant women. The elderly. People with HIV. People undergoing treatment for cancer. People who are otherwise immuno-suppressed. Too many people. I understand fear. It is a life-changingly powerful thing. But I choose knowledge. I choose medicine, and science, and to trust people who have trained and worked their lives away to to know and further it. I choose the best chance for my childs life, and for everyone elses.
