A local dog owner and dog community activist was recently confronted by a towelling-robed swimmer, wielding nothing but a towel around his neck and a voice proclaiming the sanctity of the otherwise deserted designated bathing area from “dirty” dogs, being led by wilful owners, breaking bye-laws and who “probably don’t bother wearing seatbelts either”. Thus was the logic espoused by this incensed swimmer as he proclaimed that “this is democracy” to the bewildered woman. She could, after all, walk behind the wall with her (dirty) dog and thus deny herself the beauty of the vista of Dublin Bay. Her ever patient and loyal companion, stood silently by her side, denying any wrong doing, as her responsible owner defended her harmless actions in contravention of ludicrous and ineffectual bye-laws. Laws, she explained, that do nothing to eliminate the dog and human excrement, regularly encountered on and off-shore within this exclusive stretch of beach. The concept of co-operative communities working together fell on deaf ears. They stood eye-ball to eye-ball for one brief moment and within that moment she declared him bully boy and bid him good day. He was last seen storming over the railway bridge in hurried retreat. Tranquillity was immediately restored as the woman sank to her knees to stroke her pet and to enjoy the uninterrupted vista of Dublin Bay.
