A long time ago I ordered a spy camera from a little ad in the back of a comic book. One of those I have to have that things. I was a kid. It cost a dollar. I clipped the tiny order form off the page, filled it out, addressed an envelope, put the form and a dollar bill in it and mailed it far away to Texas or New Jersey or wherever. And I waited. And waited. By the time it finally arrived some five or six weeks later I had almost forgotten about it. It was the size of an ice cube. It came with one tiny roll of tiny film and took ten tiny pictures, one or two of which were passably recognizable after developing (by mail). From order to prints, it took all summer. Late Wednesday evening I ordered a new phone online (including, of course, a camera -- two, in fact). I can check the progress of its delivery. It left Indianapolis at 3:17 this morning, was transferred in Vandalia at 5:36 this morning and arrived in Lima at 8:20 this morning. I will have it in my hands about 40 hours after ordering it. It cost more than a dollar; we pay for all the advancements of the last half-century. But those advancements are mind-boggling to me, when I stop to think about them.
