A long time ago, when I was a Senior in High School and working - TopicsExpress

A long time ago, when I was a Senior in High School and working full-time after school, I bought this car. It was a silver rag-top Malibu and it was only three years old when I got it for the amazing sum of $1800.00. Yes I really do wish I still had that car. In order to have the car though, I worked five nights a week after school then at 1:00 am, I would stop by the Crossroads Restaurant and eat then head on home. As I would drive out US 6 going east from Ligonier, about two miles out there was a sharp curve to the left and every night there was a State Trouper right there and he was waiting just for me.I guess he just thought I looked suspicious and he would pull me over and want to know what I was doing out so late. Then he always wanted to search my car and the trunk because I had long hair and a beard and might just be one of them commie, hippy freaks he had heard tell about.. This got old real fast, and just on a very important side note, we didnt have garbage trucks that came around in the country. When the garbage piled up a lot, you just loaded it up and made a trip to the dump. Well it was in the heat of the summer, so I took all the garbage we had and stuffed it all real tight in the trunk of my car. Then I took a different way home for two weeks so the garbage could simmer. After the two weeks, I went home by the normal way and sure as anything that same trouper was in that same place and he was waiting just for me. When I saw his lights, I pulled right over at the corner of Topeka Road. He wanted to know why I was out so late and I told him, I was doing the same thing as every other time he had ever stopped me. Then he asked if he could look in my trunk and I told him I really didnt think I wanted him to. He seemed a little shocked and asked what was in my trunk. I told him there was nothing in there but garbage but it was my garbage, in my trunk and I didnt think he needed to look at it. He said he could get a warrant and I told him I could wait, I could sleep there in my car just as well as at home. Well, I kid you not, that trouper radioed his headquarters and had them go and wake up Bill McGuinn the local Justice of the Peace and get a warrant to look at my garbage. He stayed right there the whole time to keep an eye on me and make sure I didnt get rid of any of my garbage. After just over two hours, another trouper showed up and sure enough he had that warrant. They both came to my window and woke me up and showed it to me. Well, I was never one to operate outside the law, so I got right out and popped the trunk while they kept a close guard. When that trunk lid came up, those two nearly fell down! The one that had been there the whole time was kinda angry. He said, What the h___ is this?. I said it was garbage. Then I said, Look, you stop me here every night and every night you search my car and every night you find nothing. I am just a young kid trying to make enough money to have a nice car. So, in the future, this is what we will do. If you stop me, you will need a warrant and someone will have to wake up Bill and we all know he doesnt like that but it is your choice. I was NEVER stopped again. Thats just how it was, growing up Ligonier in the very early 70s.
