A look into the Hawaiian perspective of the world through our traditional forms of indigenous poetry, in particular our dirges or laments- poetry for the dead... Not every one can or should translate a kanikau unless one is familiar with the Hawaiian concept of place based emotional and historical contextual reference, because without this knowledge one does a great disservice to our people in literal translation. The best way is to learn as you shadow someone who is an expert at such things, because our Hawaiian dictionary, although a monumental piece of work, fails to encompass the entirety of our language by a huge margin. There are many words that are not in there and these words are not meant to be translated piece by compartmentalized piece.
