A lot has been said about Apple this week, particularly its product announcements. A few observations: The Apple Watch is going to be revolutionary. A lot of critics said they would never buy one, that the watch doesnt really do anything, that its too expensive, etc. First off, this is the first version. Apple had to start somewhere. Theyll definitely improve it. Second, we really havent had a chance to see it, hold it and try it out. For example, we dont even know how long the battery lasts. Thats a big deal. Third, this is going to be application driven — meaning, its going to be the software that dictates how valuable it really is. Just like apps on the iPhone and iPad, innovative software WE NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED will govern how we use the watch. For example, I can see paying for something, opening hotel doors, entering sports events, boarding airplanes by simply moving my wrist near a sensor. No more fumbling for keys, wallets or tickets. Is this kind of thing a few years away? YES! But again, Apple had to start somewhere, and it got the watch dynamics perfect. Lastly, critics complained that the watch is tied to the iPhone. Well, in my mind this makes perfect sense. Instead of reaching for the phone for every call or text, you can continue hands free and reply using the watch. One cool feature I cant wait to try is being able to set my iPhone down and then use the watch to see and control what the phone sees and then remotely take photos or video. Im sure future versions of the Apple Watch will have its own camera and maybe work independently from the iPhone. But Apple works methodically to ensure an awesome user experience before implementation. We do live in exciting times, and the technological tools available to us now and in the near future are truly the stuff of Buck Rogers. Finally, while I celebrate and welcome the ingenuity, creativity and entrepreneurialism of tech innovators, my wallet doesnt fully share my enthusiasm. Lucky for me, Ive time to use these tech tools to change that situation!
