A lot of these are films from our childhoods, films we grew up with and cherish with us as fond memories. Granted, nostalgia shades may tint the lenses with bias, but screw that: Monsters Inc. A delightfully inventive tale (as you will see Pixar are full of over the next 7 days) Monsters Inc. follows Mike and Sully (Green and Blue) and their quest to become top scarers in a factory that uses childrens screams as energy. Its devilishly sinister in a really understated kind of way, but fits in just right with the light tone in a world filled with scary monsters. The main characters are great, the voice acting fits them both perfectly and their characters are contrasting and likeable, which is what you want to see in an animated buddy movie. The animation and art style is sweet, for such an old movie, the lighting and the sheen on fur and scale is captured perfectly, and the music is quirky and upbeat- composed to fit very well. The monster designs are creative and funny, like the many eyed purple Luchadore, the many armed Italian octo-monster and that hilarious jelly man who just cant catch a break. The film provides a good contrast in laughs to shock and plot, not having to much of either. It does have a little bit too dramatic tone shift in the third act- which proves a little out of place in such a happy movie- but the solution to all of the monsters problems in the end relieves this tension. Its genius and a great way to end a kids film. In terms of the sequel, I cant judge. My mum and sister had very clashing views, the former not so fond, the latter intoxicated once more in Monsters Inc. galore. In terms of me- lets just say I used to go round as a kid with a hand over my eye shouting Im Mike Wazowski!, which obviously demonstrates its effect on me, and probably why im a little wacky today. Great family fun and definitely worth a watch! 7- excellent Starting off on a high, tomorrow is another favourite from my childhood, and I should hope from yours: Finding Nemo! and for all of those patiently awaiting the sequel- April fools!
