A major economic and construction project at the former Chrysler plant in Newark is sparking opposition from nearby residents, and a discussion on the need to balance economic development, environmental concerns, and quality-of-life. Last night I attended a public presentation by The Data Centers (TDC), a company hoping to build a large data storage facility in the heart of Newark. Undoubtedly, this would bring significant numbers of high-paying union construction and permanent IT jobs to the Newark community. Newark can use this boost. The project also would involve an extremely large power plant as part of the facility. Many Newark residents are understandably concerned about air emissions, noise, and a drain on local water resources. TDC now is preparing its submissions for a variety of environmental permits.
