Esme-28: The latest birth control pill brand recalled in Canada For the third time this year, a birth control pill sold in Canada is being recalled. Health Canada announced Thursday that a generic oral contraceptive sold by Mylan Pharmaceuticals, called Esme-28, is being voluntarily recalled from the market. The recall follows the announcement late last month that Freya-28, also made by Mylan, was being pulled from pharmacies after a placebo pill was found in place of an active pill in a single package. Health Canada said Thursday it has been advised by Mylan Pharmaceuticals that they have been unable to rule out the possibility that the same packaging issue involving Freya-28 did not also affect Esme-28. “Therefore, as a precaution, Mylan Pharmaceuticals is expanding their recall to include Esme-28. To date, no packaging errors have been identified with Esme-28,” the agency said in a statement. Earlier this year, another generic brand, Alysena-28, was recalled, also because of mixed up placebo and active pills. The lot of Esme-28 affected in this latest recall bears the code # F5042001C. Like Freya-28, packages of Esme-28 should have three rows of active pills and one row of placebo pills. Health Canada says that missing one or more active pills could reduce the effectiveness of the contraception, and raises the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy. Esme-21 is not impacted, since packages of Esme-21 have only 21 active pills.
