A man has been arrested after a pursuit through the Adelaide Hills earlier today. The pursuit began in Mt Barker about 12.10pm after a suspected stolen vehicle was seen being driven along Hawthorne Road. Police stopped the vehicle and spoke with the female driver. It will be alleged the male passenger in the vehicle was wanted by police and that as officers attempted to place him under arrest he resisted, before taking control of the motor vehicle and driving off. The man allegedly failed to stop when directed by police to do so and was pursued through the Adelaide Hills for about 20 minutes. There was a minor collision involving the mans vehicle and a vehicle being driven by a member of the public on the down track of the South Eastern Freeway near the tollgate. The member of the public involved in the collision is believed to have suffered minor injuries. SA Ambulance Service attended the scene to treat both the member of the public and a police officer who suffered a cut to his arm when trying to initially apprehend the suspect. A 38-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with engaging in a police pursuit (aggravated), driving while disqualified, illegal use of a motor vehicle, breach of bail, unlawful possession and failing to stop and exchange particulars after an accident. He will be refused bail to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court tomorrow. A woman, aged in her 20s, was spoken to by police but has been released without charge. “Police take into account a wide range of risks when engaging in any pursuit, said Superintendent James Blandford, the officer in charge of the Sturt Local Service Area. Those risks include the danger posed to police, the wider public and suspects; the seriousness of the offence; the vehicles involved; the weather, traffic conditions and speeds involved. “A review of all the circumstances of this incident will be undertaken to ascertain if appropriate considerations were taken into account.”
