A man has been charged by the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit following a collision involving multiple vehicles and a fuel tanker in Mona Vale last year. About 3.40pm on Tuesday 1 October 2013, emergency services were called to the crash at Mona Vale Road, near the intersection of Samuel Street. A fuel tanker travelling east on Mona Vale Road allegedly lost control, hit a power pole and four oncoming vehicles – a utility, a Subaru, a BMW and a Commodore. The tanker came to rest on its side, with fuel pouring onto the roadway and igniting cars and surrounding bushland. As a result, the driver and passenger of the Subaru died at the scene; a 73-year-old man from Turramurra and 71-year-old man from Western Australia. Five people were also injured and taken to Royal North Shore Hospital: • A 69-year-old Warriewood man, the Honda CRV driver, • A 47-year-old Wagga Wagga man, the truck driver, • A 72-year-old woman, a passenger in the Subaru, • A 67-year-old woman, a passenger in the Subaru, and, • A 75-year-old woman, the driver of the BMW. Police from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit launched an investigation into the collision and today (Tuesday 11 March 2014), charged a 47-year-old man over six alleged offences including: • Dangerous Driving occasioning death (x2) • Dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm • Negligent driving occasioning death • Disobey trucks and buses low gear sign, and, • Not give particulars to police. He was issued a future court attendance notice and is expected to appear before Manly Local Court on Wednesday 28 May, 2014.
