A man walked up to me today at the polls and identified himself. Id had off and on contact with him and his wife over the last few years because of his inexplicably spooky horse. Nothing has had any lasting effect on him and he very recently became a pasture ornament at 8 years old because once again he blew up and drove the man into the ground for the last time. When I came to I was laying in a pool of blood with a broken nose, busted up wrist and some other things. At 71, I cant keep doing that. He had recounted about how flawless the horse had been on a number of trail rides only to blow up for no reason shortly after starting the last one. He then asked me about Faith, the Arab/App that went to the trimmer who expressed an interest in her. That set me off on my 50/50 opinion and he remarked his problem horse was half halflinger and half paint. Theres your problem, I replied. Two different breed characteristics in the same horse. On any given day you dont know which breed is in control. He nodded. Its like a switch gets flipped. People think they know more about breeding than those who have chronicled and bred horses for a particular characteristic and undo generations of consistent breeding in the interest of designing. Happens in horses, dogs, cats and even guppies.
