A man was arrested and held for 24 hours by NYPD officers after they mistook the Jolly Ranchers in his pocket for crystal methamphetamine. Love Olatunjiojo, of Brooklyn, says he and two of his buddies had just purchased the candy at the Coney Island candy store ItSugar and were walking away when they were stopped by Officer Jermaine Taylor. A subsequent frisk turned up two red crystalline rocks of solid material and four blue crystalline rocks of solid material. Taylor, who claimed in the arrest affidavit that he had professional testing as a police officer in the identification of methamphetamine, insisted a field test of the candy, which was still in its original packaging, returned a positive test for the drug. Olatunjiojo and his friend were both taken into custody on a possession charge, and a third friend was arrested for interfering with cops after attempting to inform them the meth was just candy. Olatunjiojo was released 24 hours later after the NYPD lab confirmed the candy was, in fact, just that. Olatunjiojo has since filed a lawsuit seeking unspecified damages, alleging he was unlawfully imprisoned and strip searched. I don’t know if these cops have been watching ‘Breaking Bad, said Olatunjiojos lawyer Kenneth Smith, but my client is not Walter White.
