A man who was admitted for a nasal surgery in a private nursing home in Kashmir was operated upon for piles, his relatives claimed on Saturday. The doctors allegedly mistook the man for a patient who was supposed to undergone a surgery for piles. The doctor at Mohamadiya Nursing Home in South Kashmir’s Pulwom district was supposed to conduct septoplasty on Gulzar Ahmad on Friday morning but missed the target by a long margin. Around noon, the patient was taken to the operation theatre by Dr Ghulam Qadir, who conducted the hour long surgery. “However instead of nose, the doctor conducted surgery for piles. We were shocked,” the patient’s relative Muzaffar Ahmad said. He wasn’t suffering from piles, the bewildered relative added. The patient was in reality suffering from perforated nasal septum which can be caused by an ulcer, trauma due to an inserted object, long-term exposure to welding fumes. A silicone button is usually inserted in the hole to close the open sore. “We protested against the negligence of the doctor. To calm the tempers, the doctors took the patient again to the operation theatre and conducted septoplasty, an operation for the nasal septum,” he said. However, the infuriated attendants visited the police station late Saturday evening and tried to lodge a case of negligence against the doctor but were asked to file a written complaint. A senior police official confirmed that some people had approached them to register a case of negligence. “We have asked them to file a written complaint so that we can investigate the case. So far, they didn’t turn up,” the official said. Sources said the doctor has offered a huge sum of money to the patient as compensation. Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Mohammad Hussain, said strict action will be taken if the case of negligence by doctor is established. “The family should file a written complaint with us. Even then, I’ll take note of this incident. If allegations are found true, strict action as per the law will be taken,” he added.
