A man will enter Jannah (Paradise) and will ask Allah about his companion. Allah will then open a window of Jannah to show him his companion’s place in Jahannam (Hellfire). The man will gaze upon his companion burning, and rather than ask for his forgiveness, the man will exclaim ”You almost took me there with you! It is only The Mercy of my Lord that has saved me”, meaning that this companion was a worldly companion who neither spoke about Allah nor encouraged His Worship, but rather he attempted to steer the man into the pleasures of the worldly life. Since even gazing upon the Fire of Hell is a terrible and traumatic event, when the man stops looking into Hell and turns back to his home in Paradise, Allah will cause him to believe he is looking into Paradise for the first time, and the first thing he will say is “Is there truly no more death to experience, nor punishment to endure? Indeed, this is success”. And that is how Allah will specifically reward those believers who left a bad environment or group of friends for Allah’s sake.
