A maritime tragedy immortalized in a truly great song that Ive loved for decades... but I just discovered that Gordon Lightfoot has made a change in the lyrics to The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. Originally, one of the verses included the line At seven P.M. the main hatchway caved in -- a reference to the theory that a wrongly fastened hatch caused the ship to take on water and sink. But a few years ago, new evidence proved it was the power of the storms wind and waves that led to the tragedy, not the actions of the crew, so Lightfoot rewrote the line to eliminate any implication that the men themselves were at fault. Now it goes: ...When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck Sayin Fellas, its too rough to feed ya. At 7 PM, it grew dark -- it was then he said, Fellas, its been good to know ya.
