A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Mr. Abibu Banire, has accused his wife, Kudirat Banire, of attempting to commit suicide. Banire, who appeared before an Agege Customary Court on Tuesday, sought the dissolution of the marriage on the grounds that it lacked love. He told the court that the marriage was characterised by constant nagging and fighting, adding that his wife broke bottles and attempted to stab herself to death each time they quarreled. Banire disclosed that he had no rest of mind as a result of the incessant fights between him and his wife. The husband traced the source of the quarrels between him and his wife to N60, 000 she borrowed, saying that “my second wife complains a lot.” He said, “I married two wives and I always do my best to satisfy both of them but my second wife complains a lot. Anytime we had an argument and were fighting, she tore my clothes. This is why I want dissolution of the marriage. “She lent me N60, 000 and she has been threatening me over it. She disgraced me publicly. In fact, she broke a bottle in the house threatening to kill herself. I don’t want to marry her again. I cannot marry her again considering the way she breaks bottles.” But Kuburat, who is a trader in a garage, disagreed with the submission of her husband and pleaded with the court not to dissolve the marriage. She stated her readiness to continue with the marriage despite the constant quarrels with her husband. The wife told the court that her husband is seeking for a divorce because he doesn’t want to refund the N60,000 she gave him on loan. Tendering two pictures to buttress how she was battered by her husband, she insisted she loved her husband. She said, “I don’t want to divorce my husband and I have tried several efforts to reconcile with him. I believe that the cause of this divorce suit is because I asked my husband of the N60, 000 I gave him on loan. “On July 15, 2013, I lent him N60, 000 and he promised to pay me back but when I asked him about the money, he threatened to divorce me; because the money was meant for my trade I kept on asking him for it. “On July 28, 2013, I asked him for the money again and he said if he gives me the money that will mark the end of our marriage. He later grudgingly gave me N20, 000 and the next thing I received from him after that was the court summons for a divorce suit. “He beats me and comes home very late but despite all these I didn’t report him to anybody because I didn’t want any division between us.” The court President, Mr Emmanuel Sokunle, asked each of them to present three witnesses for mediation. Pending the date of the mediation, the court, however, asked the plaintiff to give N5, 000 to the defendant for upkeep of the two children in the marriage. He adjourned the case till September 3, 2013. posted on August 24, 2013 at 12:00AM jtnng.blogspot/
