A month ago the 2014 state legislature adjourned its “short session” approved by voters in 2010. The session was limited to 35 days for the primary purpose of making budget adjustments and minor policy changes. But this year’s session adjourned amidst complaints about the short timeline and politics of an election year. Committees often met to consider bills with only one hour of notice, making it nearly impossible for citizen input – especially from those who live outside the Willamette Valley. On the other hand, some believe that Oregon faces too many complex problems to have its lawmaking body gather only once every two years; and that annual sessions help keep the Legislature on equal footing with other branches of government that work year round. Representative Mike McLane reports on the 2014 session this Wednesday at What’s Brewing? and will discuss its impact on Crook County. WHAT’S BREWING?
