A motorist has appeared in court today accused of deliberately knocking down a police officer, crushing him against a lamppost and causing multiple fractures, as he fled the scene of a reported burglary. Last night the 44-year-old officer underwent a six-hour operation to have a metal pin inserted in his left leg and plates in his fractured hip; he remains in hospital in a stable condition.
