A much maligned, but actually really good Neil Young record. It was the first in a series that got him sued by his label (Geffen) for not sounding like himself. It was inspired by his non-verbal son Ben who responded well to the Vocoder. Youngs direction was influenced by the electronic experiments of the German band Kraftwerk, but more importantly he felt that distorting his voice reflected his attempts to communicate with his son.
