A nation cannot function without a clear sense of its past. For a nation to prosper, its citizens must accept the sacrifices that are necessary to hold the nation together. An American is someone who believes in certain core values. These values forge a common culture and bind a people together. What holds America together is our love for our values of freedom, individualism, equality, and growth. Liberty offers a condition in which a person can make his own choices without fear of harm. Yet, this liberty must contain a submission to God and His will. If our liberty disobeys God or harms others, it is no longer of value. When it becomes more important to be free than to be good, freedom is no longer of value. Our individualism is valued as an American. God condemns and rewards us individually. We should demand our government do the same. Yet we should individually be responsible to our God and our government as well. We hold the individual responsibility to ensure our lives and our government operate with God at its core. "One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Our pledge of allegiance is an allegiance to American equality. Every American should be treated the same. God made us in His image, equally. "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal." Yet, Americans have often failed to live up to this value. We have allowed our prejudices to treat others unfairly. Again, we are responsible to ensure our actions lead to equality for all Americans. The growth of our nation has been valued since America began. This country was founded by European settlers in search of new opportunities. Yet, we should be careful not to allow our desire for growth to develop into greed and selfishness. Our nation is suffering. We need a renewed heart that seeks to please God, while holding these values in high esteem in our lives, and holding our government accountable to those values.
