A new feature for the 2014/15 season is a match preview written specially for us by Miss Green. There will be one for each of the preseason and league games and they will be added as files in the group (to be kept for posterity and possible blackmail purposes) and posted here so everyone can read them at your leisure ******************************************* Match preview Hitchin Town v Luton Town 17 July 2014 At last - actual live football!! Feels like a lifetime since Ronnie lifted that weird-shaped trophy and the supporters dodged the flying player’s boots whilst being serenaded from the balcony by MC Matt Robinson. After the anti-climax that was the England team’s short-lived trip to Brazil, we look forward to the Conference champion’s first outing just up the road, away to Hitchin Town. This first warm-up game will give fans a look at some of Sir John’s close season purchases. Luton Town has a long tradition playing Hitchin in pre-season; formed in 1928, they play their home games at the archaic Top Field ‘stadium’, which holds a whopping 4000 supporters. Playing in yellow and green, the Canaries currently reside in the Southern Football League (Premier Division). Their average home attendance is around the 390 mark, with a record attendance of 7878 for a FA Amateur Cup game with Wycombe Wanderers in 1955. Previous managers include Luton and Chelsea’s most famous Class A user - Kerry Dixon, and former defender Darren Salton. They are currently managed by Mark Burke, who made 700+ appearances for Hitchin Town between 1985 and 2005, and was present in the FA cup giant-killing squads against Hereford and Bristol Rovers in the 1990s. Current players to look out for include former St. Albans striker Simon Martin, newcomer Nick Burtenshaw and midfielder Lucas Kirkpatrick. So, enjoy your evening in Hitchin. Famous for being the home of the brilliant Spanish football journo Guillem Balague, Mr. Prank from Bear Behaving Badly (nope, me neither), and Dot Cotton’s husband Jim, who may actually be dead, I’m not sure? Hitchin has also produced footballers Jack Wilshere and everyone’s favourite Watford pikey, Kevin Phillips. In other useless information, Hitchin was also the first town to introduce black bins bags for rubbish collections, and the largest hailstones ever recorded fell on the market town in 1687. Hatters Talk....bringing you useless information and more, right through the whole of the season. Match prediction: 3-0 Town. Next match: Barnet (A), 20th July. Miss Green.
