A new report released by Massachusetts Health Policy Commission estimates that between 21 percent and 39 percent of the states health care spending – between $14.7 billion and $26.9 billion in 2012 – is wasteful. The report identifies a number of factors that contribute to the waste, with the biggest ones being unnecessary hospital re-admissions, unnecessary visits to the emergency room and hospital infections.
