A new semester, and a new set of student lectures. This semester, were running XSAC5002: Popcorn Pundit. In Popcorn Pundit, each lecturer takes a film, a book, or a television series they love and uses it as a springboard for a discussion about a key issue from their discipline or the wider world. Rather than analysing the film in excruciating detail, lecturers take a small snippet and explore the ideas contained in that. Whereas Introduction to Everything provides very general, quite theoretical, overviews of disciplines, Popcorn Pundit brings a much narrower gaze to dissect more detailed ideas, thoroughly-grounded in current issues. This has led to discussions as varied as what James Camerons Avatar tells us about property law to what Captain Americas chorus girls tell us about the military industrial complex. As usual, were looking for more speakers. We know that the idea of tackling a whole film, book, or series can be intimidating, so come along this Thursday at 6pm and see if it looks interesting. Trust me, presenting is a great deal of fun.
