A nice letter in the Joplin Globe from some community members. joplinglobe/editorial/x250215866/Your-View-Grateful-for-friends By Gloria and Manuel Candia Special to The Globe NEOSHO, Mo. — We want to recognize our heroes of the day. Specifically we thank: Mike Jones, Diamond police chief; Gerald Ezell, Diamond fire chief; Gordon Skogsberg, assistant fire chief; Roy Towe, Diamond firefighter; Roger Schmidt, a member of the Diamond Fire Department board; and Scotty’s Rentals in Neosho. All of these men came to our aid when our beloved dog, a Saint Bernard, died. Sebastian was the greatest and most devoted pet ever. He died on Sept. 5 and had been with us almost 11 years. We are both in our 70s, and we knew we would not be able to dig such a large grave. Sebastian weighed 155 pounds, and my husband built him a very heavy coffin. We drove into Diamond to find help and stopped at the police station. Within a half-hour, these men were here working hard, and Roger Schmidt had his tractor and dug down as far as he could. One of the men called Scotty’s Rentals, and they let them use a backhoe free of charge. The mission was accomplished, and Sebastian is in his final resting place. We feel so fortunate to live in a great community. We will be forever grateful to the special men of Diamond and Neosho. Gloria and Manuel Candia Neosho
