A note sent to Pipe Major Pam Revard ..... Pam, Thank you for allowing me to join the fine men and women of the Gates Keystone Club Police Pipes and Drums.. I cannot express what an honor it has been for me to have played with you, unfortunately, three times now, as we laid fallen brothers to rest and carried them home with dignity and honor... As you well know, I recently retired from the NYPD, unfortunately do to 9/11 related illnesses that prevented me from continuing to do a job that I absolutely loved to do... Over the course of 22 years of service as a NYC Police Officer, Volunteer Firefighter and Bagpiper, you can probably imagine how many Line Of Duty Funerals I have attended and/or, taken part in, including friends and co-workers I knew personally and professionally, especially in the weeks and months preceding the events of September 11th 2001. I must admit, at times, as a survival mechanism, I have sometimes remained emotionless and void of feeling at these funerals. However, since I began my journey on the pipes and participated in nearly a dozen line of duty funerals, including massed bands, I have gained a greater appreciation and admiration for just what the pipes and drums mean to those in attendance... The importance of our presence is immense and should not be over looked or minimized !! I would like to personally thank ALL the members of your fine band for always treating me and my band mates with the utmost respect and overwhelming hospitality and love and know that I and the Rockland County Firefighters Pipes and Drums are always here for you if you need us... I would very much appreciate it if you read my email to your band so that they know just how much our friendship means to me personally. Thank you and as always, be safe Sincerely Matt Nanook DeGennaro Pipe Corporal/ Band Manager Rockland County Firefighters Pipes and Drums
