A once-active environmental campaigner well-known in Whakatane, Barry Marshall, is standing for mayor. Mr Marshall, who has been living in Auckland for some years and is wheelchair bound due to a stroke, lodged his nomination papers yesterday. He is the fifth confirmed candidate after Tony Bonne, David Dowd, Scott Jarrett and Fiona Wiremu. Two others, Julie Jukes and Mawera Karetai have told the Beacon of their intention to stand for mayor, and have until noon on Friday to lodge their nomination papers.
