A parent asks our group: Hi, Does anyone have any advice for dealing with schools? My son is 9 and has SPD. The school says that this is not a diagnosis that is included in its special needs program. So when it comes to big exams etc he isnt entitled to extra time or a scribe. The school doesnt seem to recognise SPD at all??? Even my daughters child psych told me that SPD is not a stand alone diagnosis that my son must have some other issue. I dont know what to do in relation to the school. I have OT letters and reports and still they said no special consideration for any externally set long exams. Last years teacher didnt follow any of the advice in the OT letters and didnt encourage or remind my son to do his hand exercises etc. My son is very bright and articulate but struggles with FM and too much noise/distractions amongst other things. The teacher seemed to think that my son just needed to settle in and mature. I have a meeting set up with the new teacher for this year but am worried it will be the same as last year.
