A parent asks our group: Hi all, My 5 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with SPD by an OT not long after she turned 5. I knew since she was 3 months that something was different with her, but I couldnt pinpoint what, neither could GPs, I ended up getting a referral to a pediatrician when she was 31/2 who seen her on a regular basis due to her impulse control and hyperactivity. My daughter ended up seeing an OT who diagnosed her as having SPD and being a sensory seeker which all makes sense. My question for other parents (as this is the first time I have heard of SPD) is what is typical for a seeker? My daughter also seems to have avoider aspects as well. She wont eat a wide variety food and dislikes having her hair washed but it doesnt take much encouragement as long as I promise to be very careful not to get any water on her face at all. Is this avoidant behavior of part of seeking? Im a little confused, my major worry is her eating as she only eats plain white rice or plain penne pasta, her range of food that she will eat is very limited. Pretty much as long as the food doesnt have sauce or isnt gooey she will eat it, things like plain cut up sausage or thin sliced salami or just plain white bread with no crusts. Whenever I try to make her eat something new she starts gagging and sometimes throws up. Its so concerning for us, my 2 year old eats a wider range of food and more than she does on a daily basis
