A parent asks our group: How does everyone handle meltdowns at the store? Our son is 2, has not yet had his diagnosis, its not till June, but he is currently listed with developmental and sensory delay. Every single time we go to the store he explodes when you put him in the cart. This involves screaming so loud that your ears feel like they do when a plane lifts off or you get to the top of a tall hill. It also involves, kicking us, hitting us, biting even sometimes. He is almost 40 lbs. and its a huge struggle to try and get him in the cart. He is also very strong. It takes me and his dad to get him in and still takes about 5 mins. We have tried using his stroller, but he doesnt sit down in it anymore, he stands and tries to get out and he is too big for the straps now. We have also tried headphones and an iPod with the Native American and Celtic flute music he loves, and that worked for a while but is not working anymore. We recently tried a new shopping cart cover with lots of attachment loops on it that we attached all kinds of sensory toys too, but that was only distracting to him the first time, and we were only in the store a couple of seconds. He takes his weighted blanket but that doesnt work for getting him in the cart. He has a tag fixation and so his weighted blanket has tons of tags on it that he can rub when he is stressed, but it seems like he is so overstressed from getting in the cart that nothing helps him. We have also tried bribing with just about anything including chocolate but dont like to do that.
