A peak at our 2014 VivaFest Mariachi Gala co-production with Symphony Silicon Valley. You might say this collaboration began back stage at our 2013 Gala, where we presented the symphony with our mariachi artists for the first time. Back stage is great idea lab if I do say so myself. This production and the music and dance education conference that preceded it represents a year of work and preparation by over 25 instructors, 16 student dance and mariachi groups and countless volunteers and parents, as well as dedicated staff at San Jose Unified School District. Students to our Big Fat Mariachi Summer Camp came from Arizona, Texas, and Southern California. Next stop: a national policy conference on music and dance education August 27 and 28 hosted by the White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanics, and for which VivaFest is a co-planner. Honored to be selected to help plan this first time White House national conference focusing on standards based mariachi education and other culturally relevant music and dance programs. Thank you SSV, Jose Hernandez, Mariachi Sol De Mexico, and the members of the many ensembles and organizations who participated and helped to make VivaFest happen including Mariachi Alma de Mexico, Mariachi Mi Tierra Linda, Mariachi Azteca, Mariachi Perla de San Jose, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, and Mariachi Estelar de Gilroy, Danzantes Unidos and Los Mestizos de San Jose and the following SJUSD schools: Lincoln High, San Jose High, Burnett Middle School, Horace Mann Elementary, and Anne Darling Elementary.
