A period of potentially significant icing is among the meteorological challenges facing Chicago and this portion of the Midwest this weekend. Saturday morning appears the period at greatest risk for ice accumulations. A week of cold weather has the ground cold and air temps may remain at or below freezing through Saturday morning. Its during this period travel could become dicey--particularly on untreated or less traveled surfaces. But the Saturday ice challenge is hardly the only one in the coming week. The bitter winds of winter are to deliver a series of frigid arctic blasts--the first sweeping in Sunday amid falling temperatures. Temps by nightfall Sunday are likely to fall to the low and mid teens--and may well be flirting with if no (in parts of the Chicago area) below zero as Monday gets underway. The cold airs arrival sets the stage for a period of snow commencing in Sunday mornings pre-dawn then continuing on and off daytime Sunday as well. The brutally cold temps which follow Sunday night and Monday are to be followed by a second wave of snowfall Tuesday. Then, an even colder blast of arctic air hits Tuesday night and is likely to produce a day of single digit high temps Wednesday into Thursday. Its a good bet the seasons coldest temps to date are likely in the coming week.
