A personal memory of the Detroit News building is of me sitting in the massive lobby of the Old Gray Lady with News columnist Matt Beer in 1983 as he tried talking me out of a story I was writing for the Oakland Press that exposed Judge William John Beers double life as a strict, conservative judge who secretly fathered nine children outside his marriage, including Matt. With Detroit News journalism giants like Don Ball passing by, the citys most famous gossip columnist argued there was no story there. A few weeks later more than a thousand papers across the country ran the piece and it later became a made-for-TV movie.
