A photo is doing the rounds about female police officers wearing police issue hijabs is popping up on my news feed, accompanied by the usual Im proud to be English and this is wrong and Im not racist, but... Bull. Im struggling to see the actual problem here. The hijab has apparently been introduced as an option for Muslim women as part of the uniform. No one is being forced to wear one, Muslim or not. This is not a win for the Muslims, as they are not trying to win anything! This has been put in place to show female Muslims that they are welcome as part of the police force, and to give those who choose to wear a hijab as part of their religion a chance to do something that they were previously restricted in doing. Giving them a chance to do something for the community that they are proud to be a part of. It does not stop them from doing their job and does not make them any less of a police officer! To say that its wrong is no different to the stories that you hear about Christians not being allowed to wear crosses, which all of these Proud to be English types are quick to jump on and defend that persons right to express their religion!! And for those who are saying that Im a proud Englishman, and this is wrong I remind you that there are lots of English Muslims, its not just an immigrant thing! Those people who are usually shouting Im proud to be English and Im not racist, but..., I have news! If you were proud to be English/British, then youd accept the wonderful diversity that this country has had and enjoyed since long before you were a tadpole in your dads nut sack. This is an excuse to be racist! Yes you are racist! Next, do not compare a Muslim woman choosing to wear a hijab to what happened with the Nazis or the IRA (as I have read in some of the posts!)... These things are very different, and you know it! To compare this to any atrocities committed by the Nazis or the IRA is an insult to the victims!
